Updated Production Schedule

Because i have added in a third shoot, due to my previous shots not being to the best of my ability, it has changed my deadlines, and made the process longer. It has held me back on starting other things, such as my Digi-pack, and editing because i have made a whole new story board, full of better and more detailed frames. Because of this i have made an updated production schedule.

FRAMES

I have put much more detail and important directions for camera use throughout these frames, which i think will make a big difference when it comes to shooting because the basic gist of each shot is written down and easy to follow.

RISK ASSESSMENT

'Ben Winston' - Director and Producer

Ben Winston is a very popular director, best known for his work on T.V documentaries, such as 'one direction- one year in the making', and he has also directed, produced and co-writtern 'The Brits' with good pal James Cordon for the past three years. He was also specially asked by the royal family to travel around the world for nearly a year with Sir Gary Barlow, in order to make the 'Sing' With the commonwealth band for charity. Why i am interested in him is because he has recently produced and Directed, not only '1D this is us' the one direction Movie, but the last two Music video's of their latest singles from their third album.

One direction, as you probably know are the worlds biggest boy band of yet, and have took not only Britain and America by storm, but the whole world, and Ben Winston has done his best in promoting them and their music through their latest videos.

After watching 'Story of My Life' and ' Best Song Ever' i can see how much of a great Director Winston is. During Best song ever, he shows them in a completely new element, showing them as actors, and creating the comedy sketch at the beginning, which no other boy band has ever been seen to do.

I like to use Ben Winston as inspiration, suing one direction video 'Story of my life' as my reason for this. The video, that Ben Winston has created includes performance, and narrative in a completely new style. He has shown the boys in yet again new light, and a more emotionally connected view of them.

In the video, we see old family photos of when One Direction were younger, and then Ben winston has re-created that exact photo but with the people as they are now in it. I love the narrative this pulls out of the song, and how it resembles a whole new meaning of the song. In my music video i want to be able to create emotion and understanding through my use of shots, and how i edit them together.
Ben Winston has managed to show what could be seen as cheesy boy band with a potential cheesy song, in a mature view that you can connect with and shows how they've grown from there past music videos, even though they are still in fact five young boys.

I want to be able to do this with my Artist, even though Jack is a young artist trying to break through, i want him to be taken seriously and for his music and the music video to be emotionally portrayed and understood.

Evaluation for Shoot 2)

After looking over through 60 shots from shoot 2 on the 11th of November, there not exactly how i want them to look, and there are many things i should have set on the camera to produce a better clear and more effective shot. This is why i have decided i am going to go on a 3rd shoot and shoot a few shots again taking on board what i have noticed and learnt from, throughout looking over shoot 2.

I also didn't account for such short time of natural day light when filming. So we ran out of natural light a lot earlier then i had planned, which meant my shots were darker then i had wished for, which is what i'm going to make sure i plan for on shoot 3. I will start filming much earlier.

Here are a few screen shots from shoot 2 showing the negatives.

In this first screen shot, you can see I haven't set the white balance at the correct level, which is why Lauren's face looks very orange and un natural in the shot.

In this second shot, the framing could be set so much better. Because of the natural direction our human eyes chose to look and focus on when looking at something especially someone, we are look in front of them, the directing they are usually facing or heading towards. However, in this shot there is plenty of un-needed wasted space. The white wall we can see on Jack's left takes up far to much of the shot, and when i re-shoot i will cut down the amount of white wall so we can just see the slightest view of it, and jack starts as far to left side of the frame as possible.

In this third screen shot of one of my shots, its hard to see to the extent of the flickering light, but in this shot I didn't have the camera on its correct setting so there was rolling light throughout the shot, which just ruins the whole shot all together.

These are the main reasons why I am doing a shoot 3, so i can make my shots and overall video to a much higher standard and not make stupid mistakes.

Evaluation for Shoot 1)

Shoot 1) went really well. It took a lot longer then had planned, because i decided to experiment with many different shots that had only sprung to mind when everything was set up and i was looking through the camera. After filming my original 2 versions of the opening, i tried out more that i hadn't framed on the story boards, and after looking through them have realised they work better, and give the effect and look i'm hoping for.

Fan Base Research

In order to be able to gain the fan base i would like, and to promote appropriately towards this, i need to look into other bands/artists who have a similar fan base to mine.

What am i looking for?

  • How they promote themselves
  • Their particular image
  • Their genre of music
  • Past music videos
  • How they involve themselves with the fans E.g through the media
MY FAN BASE AIM;
My target audience is roughly from age 14 up to young adults (early 20's). in order to do this i need to find out whats 'in' and whats appropriate and what this age range likes in this generation of things. Also to be able to entice and keep personal and relate to this diverse age range. i have to appeal to 15 year olds as-well-as fans who are 21.

I dont want the genre of my Artist to just fit into the 'pop' area of the industry. I want to add in an indie element to fit into the indie pop. I feel this will widen my fan base and make it more diverse.

I can already tell from the ideas i have, that my artists is going to appeal more the the female popularity, however i don't want to isolate myself to just girls, i do want to try and reach out to the male society, and to not completely block that element out.

Demographics;

Age: 15 to 25
Sex: 75% female- 15% male
Background: Prominently middle class
Occupation: Largely students
Race: Mostly caucasian

RESEARCH

'Rizzle Kicks'

Rizzle kicks are an english hip-hop duo from Brighton. There debut album 'Stereo typical' was released october 2011, and have sold over 1million singles and 600,000 albums in the UK. There fan base consists of a similar age range that i am aiming for.

Their past music videos have been mainly about showing them as people and what sort of act they are. Their former music video's have shown they are down to earth people who don't take themselves to seriously and enjoy what they do and make the most of it.

'The 1975'
The 1975 are an English, Manchester-based alternative rock/indie band from Wilmslow in Cheshire. The Group consists of 4 young adult males. They have released four EP;s and released their first debut album in september 2013, which went straight to the top of the charts.

Their image is very quirky, indie-hipster. Their not the average pretty boy band. Their faces isn't what promotes them as a band, it's their music and overall style.

The reason why 1975 interest me is because they are not a pop band with loads of small girls chasing after them. They are an alternative band, however they managed to make it to number one in the charts which is very unconventional, meaning their fan base is of a variety and quite diverse. With my artist i'm aiming to dive into the same fan category as these three artists/band.

 "James Arthur"
James Arthur is a british singer and musician who won the ninth series of The X Factor in 2012. His debut single, "impossible", was released after the final and debuted at number one on the UK singles chart in it's first week of release. He is solo artist, whose music is pop  but with an edgy feel. He, like Rizzle Kicks and The 1975, writes his own songs. I like this element of these artists/bands because it creates originality and a more personal feel between fans and the artists because the song they are hearing is relating to the artist most of the time.

James Arthurs image is very similar to how i my Artist is going to present themselves. This look is very popular with the girl at the moment, so this is a good way to bring fans in before the music element kicks in.

  PROMOTION

These three artists/band/duos all promote themselves and have presented themselves through radio stations such as Radio one, and performed on radio live lounge. This is a very in- piece of media in this generation, and a lot of well established artists as well as some alternative not as well known artists. Its a good place to get seen for your talent. I would definitely follow in their footsteps, and promote get my Artist involved within areas such as Radio Live lounge.

Biggest influence
Ed Sheeran as an artist is a big influence when thinking about my artist and what sort of crowd he would fit into and how he would choose to present himself to his fans. When doing my research i realised 'The A team' Ed Sheeran's first single and music video is a really good example to discuss because it matches what i want to achieve exactly. This music video is a narrative and represents the
lyrics beautiful and very effectively. This is exactly what i want my music video to do, not to show the artist as a shining star but to enforce the meaning and message of the song, and to promote the artists for his skilled song writing and messages portrayed which Ed Sheeran is known for being extremely talented in doing so.

During research of this particular music video i found out it was actually nominated for a Grammy, which shows the effect this video had on the public/the fans of Ed Sheeran and the popularity of his choice of music video convention.

My Treatment

Aims

Music videos are a way to promote the artists and the song in a visual way other than just hearing the audio. Music videos are a way of expressing a musician's view of his song. It gives us an insight into what the artist was thinking when writing the song, and what the message and overall meaning of the song is. My aim is to create a music video to do exactly that. I want to create a visual narrative to match the lyrical narrative of the song. This music video will promote the artist, the song and get their music recognised.

Structure

My Artist is a new and up-coming singer-song writer, who is looking to get his songs outin the public and understood by the public. He is wanting to promote his talent and be recognised for not only his voice but his talent for song-writing. Because of this, the music video is going to be a narrative. Its going to promote the story line more then just the idolise the artist. The video, will have lots of different shots resembling the meaning of the song, and pushing forward the dull, hard and challenging life this girl leads. My artist is performing the song as-well as playing the role of a character in the video. To ensure the Music video is intresting to watch and keeps people switched on, it will be quite fast paced and edgy. There's lots being fitted in, like flashbacks to focus on for example. There will be a shadowing effect, and im aiming to loose cloulour in some of my shots when editing it all together, to create the rough damaged atmosphere to represent this girls life. the peice will flow together as a story, but include memory flashbacks mixed in to help gather the underlying message of the song.

Location

There are a few locations i will be using to shoot in for my music video. The locations selected shall be chosen to ensure it is in context with scene and meets the vision of the piece. When filming in different locations many people need to be informed and permission needs to be asked.

  • Im aiming to shoot some scenes in my sisters flat and in the corridors of these flats. So i need to get my sisters permission and her nieghbours.
  • Im also planning on using a friends house for the first scene, so i will need the owner of the house' permission to do so.
  • The third location will be in a park in windsor. I will need to make sure i get intouch with the local council in order to check im allowed to do what i have planned.
